A CAMP commandant in the Defence ministry has been sucked into the $300 000 cleaning services scam and appeared in court yesterday.
Luxwell Ngara, 51, was charged with fraud when he appeared before Harare regional magistrate Hosea Mujaya. He was released on $1 500 bail, ordered to report once every Wednesday to Chegutu Police Station and not to interfere with witnesses. The matter was remanded to February 13.
Ngara was stationed at the Defence House and his duties included upkeep of the building and certification of jobs done by various contractors. Between March and June last year, Ngara allegedly connived with Danison Muvandi — who is on the run — Peter Muchakazi and Kunofiwa Mervyn Madondo, who have already appeared in court over the same allegations.
The quartet allegedly connived to defraud the Defence ministry by misrepresenting that Maids on Wheels (Pvt) Ltd had rendered cleaning services yet in actual fact no such services had been received.
The court heard that Muchakazi then fraudulently sourced fake invoices from Maid on Wheels which totalled $306 135. The ministry suffered prejudice of $306 135 and nothing was recovered.
