We’re backing protest, MDC Alliance says

MDC Alliance vice president Tendai Biti, pictured, yesterday said their party continues to back tomorrow’s protest against corruption despite spirited efforts to stop it.
This comes after Zanu PF acting spokesperson Patrick Chinamasa ordered ruling party supporters to defend themselves and use any means at their disposal to thwart the demonstration.
Responding to Chinamasa at a press conference in Harare yesterday, Biti said the threats cannot stop people from exercising their rights.
“It’s Zanu PF itself which is a terrorist organisation which abducts people, where is (MDC Alliance officials) Job Sikhala, Makomborero Haruzivishe and Gift Siziba; they are all in hiding, haunted by a predator…
“We support the right of citizens who have organised the 31 July; we support their constitutional right to embark in a peaceful and constitutional protest against the regime as codified in Section 59 of the Constitution.
“We reject the fascist response by the regime, in particular the remarks by the deranged Chinamasa, who would have asked for dialogue with organisers of the events of 31 July,” Biti said.
The former Finance minister in the confidence-inducing Government of National Unity between 2009 and 2013 said corruption had destroyed the country.
“Corruption is killing our country; we estimate as MDC Alliance that every dollar paid by the taxpayer in Zimbabwe, 60 cents is being stolen. There are no drugs in hospitals because of corruption. We are concerned by the continuous human rights violations; we are receiving reports of massive abductions across the country.
“There are colleagues who have been abducted in Chiredzi and Bulawayo. We are concerned on the attack on the general membership of our movement and the general public.
“We are concerned about the efforts to liquidate the MDC Alliance. We take great exception to the description of our alliance as a terrorist by a ramshackle individual who is not qualified to make that statement in the form of (Patrick) Chinamasa. We are a legitimate and constitutional organisation,” Biti said.
Chinamasa on Monday issued a warning saying the ruling party supporters must defend themselves.
