TOURING DJs lead lives that are filled with a variety of highs and lows. From the thrill of peak time raving to the exhaustion of back-to-back travel and navigating unknown places, these DJs experience a unique rollercoaster of emotions.
Yet, no matter the highs and lows, touring DJs always find a way to put on a great show and make their fans happy. We caught up with DJ Rimo as he shed light on his experiences as well as the challenges in the deejaying industry.
“Being a DJ in a small country such as Zimbabwe is a challenge because the club scene is not as big as say, South Africa,” said DJ Rimo.
“This means as a DJ you will need to be very good at your craft to make an impact.”
The Deejay said it took him a long time to get to a level where he is now recognised as one of the best in his field.
“No a lot of Zimbabwean DJs have managed to cross over onto the international market because it’s a competitive industry,” he revealed.
DJ Rimo got his first 2022 international gig in March of 2022 in Dubai at the Hustlers Brunch Polo event at Melia Desert Palm. The following month in April he flew to the US for another polo event hosted by Yabe events at Preston Wood Polo Club in Dallas Texas.
His visible footprint in the Deejaying world culminated in his nomination for Best Male DJ at the African Social Entertainment Awards (ASEA), eventually winning the award and becoming the first Zimbabwean DJ to do so.
Earlier in May 2021 DJ Rimo, born Tinotenda Takunda Marimo performed in South Africa, Johannesburg at the Dope Party alongside Faith Nketsi and Casper Nyovest. The event was hosted by MORE Entertainment.
“In June I was called back to perform in Pretoria back-to-back with Malumnator and Black Coffee at 012 Lifestyle Brooklyn one of the biggest clubs in Pretoria,” said DJ Rimo.
By then his name was doing the rounds in the entertainment sector and he again performed in Johannesburg at Egyptian Latino before making a return to 012 Lifestyle Brooklyn where the event was hosted by Pearl Thusi for a VIP birthday soiree for the club owner.
