POLICE have arrested an MDC Alliance councillor for calling President Emmerson Mnangagwa a “fool” in a WhatsApp message.
Chrispen Rambu, 39, the MDC Alliance councillor for Ward 8 in Chipinge, was arrested on Friday and has been charged with insulting the Head of State.
In the WhatsApp message, Rambu compared Mnangagwa with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
This was after Ramaphosa announced a R500 billion stimulus package to cushion companies and businesses in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, which has so far claimed nearly
200 000 lives globally.
According to the court documents, the complainant in the case is police chief superintendent Trustworthy Makunike, who is the officer commanding Chipinge district.
Rambu is accused of contravening Section 33 of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act, a law which led to the arrest of over 200 people during the late former president Robert Mugabe’s era.
Freeman Netsai Mujaji, created a WhatsApp group called Chipinge Central Development in March 2016, before Rambu joined with other participants.
“On the 21st of April 2020 at 21:18 hours, the accused person sent a WhatsApp message to the group which undermined the authority of the president…. and reads: “Ramaphosa just announced South Africa’s stimulus package. Seeing him addressing and comparing him with ED you won’t doubt that we are having a fool for a Head of State”.
According to the State, Rambu — who is represented by Mekias Gwamanda from the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) — acted unlawfully by sending the message on WhatsApp.
Rambu has since appeared before a Chipinge magistrate and was remanded to May 8 on $500 bail.
