Government urged to preserve heritage sites

WAR veterans in Manicaland province have implored the government to protect heritage sites and mass graves in order to preserve the national heritage.

Speaking to the Daily News yesterday, provincial war veteran’s chairman Linda Mathathu said protecting the sites would ensure the country’s history remain relevant for future generations.

“There is a need for the government to ensure the national heritage sites across the province are taken care of and to have decent burials for those in mass graves for the preservation of national heritage. There are so many mass grave sites dotted across the province and these comrades deserve proper burial.

“The moment there is no resources and no policy to provide for comrades to be repatriated to the homes of origins. There is Ngaone, Chibonere, Mutandahwe, Dombera and Muumbe where mass graves are not being taken care of and we urge authorities to put in place laws to protect these heritage sites and put plaques,” said Mathathu.

She added that the Zanu PF is going to win the upcoming elections as they are going to use the recent by-elections win in Mutasa district as a springboard to win resoundingly for the ruling party and President Mnangagwa developmental thrust.

“People are responding well to our message, for instance since we took over the leadership of the party in the province, we manage to win council by-election in Mutasa district and with that momentum currently prevailing in the province, there is nothing which going to stop the revolution party from winning resoundingly for President Mnangagwa and the party.

“The people are receiving the party very well and this is on the backdrop of President Mnangagwa development thrust which people are witnessing. Since the cyclone Idai hits Chimanimani district our government has taken an infrastructure drive to ensure our people are provided with basic necessities such as schools, clinics and the widening of roads,” she said.
