Gold ore robbery suspects freed

HIGH Court judge Justice Hlekani Mwayera recently granted $1 000 bail each to nine men accused of stealing gold in Penhalonga.

Innocent Chinonzwa, 39, Lovemore Chinonzwa, 37, Maxwell Masamvu, 39, Bright Mabonore, 40, John Mbeu, 42, Wiskes Kovhiwa, 32, Marlon Maringa, 28, Wellington Moyo, 35, and Terrence Mukodza, 34, will return to court on June 26.

It is the state’s case that the nine raided Monarch 11B Mine’s underground tunnel on May 15 at around 1900 hours where its employees George Mushati, Shadreck Nyabeze and Thomas Maara were working. Moyo was reportedly armed with a loaded pistol.

The gang reportedly threatened to kill the three mine workers if they did not surrender gold ore. Moyo reportedly fired a shot after the trio tried to resist. The nine then went away with 10 bags of gold ore weighing 25 kilogrammes each.

Police found a spent cartridge at the crime scene.

Ballistic tests at the Criminal Investigation Department Forensic Unit proved that the spent cartridge was from Moyo’s gun.
