Fadzayi Mahere picked up
MDC Alliance spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere has become the latest opposition figure to be arrested for allegedly claiming a police officer killed a baby in Harare last week.
Mahere is accused of peddling falsehoods which are prejudicial to the State and causing resentment of the police force. The video was widely shared on various social media platforms, drawing mixed reactions and police had to issue a statement explaining what had transpired.
Law enforcement agents refuted the allegations and claimed that both the baby and the mother were fine following a scuffle in the capital. Mahere’s arrest follows the arrest of MDC Alliance vice chairperson and Zengeza West legislator Job Sikhala for commenting on the video on Facebook.
She was yesterday detained at Harare Central police station with the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) confirming her arrest.
“Police have proceeded to charge Mahere with violating section 31 of the Criminal Code. She is at Harare Central Police Station. “Broad charge against Mahere is Section 31 of Criminal Code…publishing or communicating a statement intending or realising risk or possibility of inciting or promoting public order or public violence or endangering public safety, with alternative charge, Section 31…undermining public confidence in law enforcement agency,” ZHLR said.
Mahere was last year arrested for allegedly participating in the foiled July 31 protests which the organisers said was a fight against corruption.
