Daily News keeps ahead of the game

THE country’s most influential daily, the Daily News, is once again among the top 200 brands in the country. This was announced on Friday by the Marketers Association of Zimbabwe (MAZ), following a nationwide consumer research.

Reacting to the news, Adelaide Moyo, the Group Managing Editor of Jester Media Services (JMS) — the owners of the iconic Daily News — said it was surreal that the newspaper continued to do well since its stunning relaunch just over a decade ago.

“This is another feather in the cap for the inimitable daily which recently celebrated 12 years since its seemingly impossible relaunch in March 2011, after nearly eight years of forced and unjust closure by the late former president Robert Mugabe’s government in September 2003, for the crime of telling the Zimbabwean story like it is, without fear or favour.

“When we came back, against all odds, many people believed that a snow ball had a better chance of surviving in hell than we had.

“But a decade down the road, we are still here and thriving, with the Daily News leading where others follow — be it with regards to our editorial offering or our commercial sustainability. “Our gratitude goes to MAZ for this honour, as well as to our hundreds of thousands of readers and the many business partners who make us great,” Moyo said.

In a speech read on his behalf by his head of marketing Emillia Mabika, ZB Bank chief executive, Shepherd Fungura, said local companies should embrace environmental, social and governance (ESG) initiatives to set up their brands for success.

“When we talk of ESG, we are talking about embracing sustainability, championing social responsibility and ensuring that our governance practices set the gold standard. “Zimbabwe has joined this global movement, proudly waving the flag of ESG compliance across sectors, signalling to the world that we mean business both figuratively and literally,” Fungura said.

On her part, MAZ president Lillian Mubayiwa said the Super brand Awards were critical to every brand custodian, brand manager, and marketing or public relations practitioner, as they gave insights on their brand’s performance and customer feedback. “The Super brand Awards are a very key indicator of your brand’s standing in the market.

“After the awards are conducted, a detailed report is published with information that is increasingly being used by practitioners to gain insights on their brand performance,”Mubaiwa said.

Other brands which were nominated for recognition included Econet, Old Mutual, Delta Corporate, OK Zimbabwe, Simbisa Brands, Steward Bank, TM Pick n Pay, Zinara and CBZ Bank.
