Coltart statement stirs debate

SPORTS WRITER

ZIMBABWE Cricket’s scathing response to former Sports Minister David Coltart’s criticism has torched debate with social media awash with reactions from a cross section of individuals.

This comes at a time that Zimbabwe has suffered a number of lopsided defeats to world cricket powerhouses South Africa and New Zealand, to add to a string of far from pleasing results in recent months.

The performances by the Chevrons, in particular, have been met with criticism with some quarters also accusing ZC of not selecting players on merit. The SRC has also been drawn into the matter with the local sports mother body reportedly saying it would look into allegations made by one Paidamwoyo Madondo, a US-based Zimbabwean data analyst and lawyer, who petitioned them to look into allegations of bias in national team selection, among other things.

Amid all this, Coltart has also been vocal about his criticism of ZC, most recently stating on his X (Twitter) handle: “As a Zimbabwean patriot I am finding the current state of Zimbabwe cricket deeply distressing. To see our national team being decimated by New Zealand stirs deep emotions within me. It is clear that our players are utterly disheartened.”
