Chipezeze backs Magesi to improve form

FORMER Warriors goalkeeper and Magesi captain Elvis Chipezeze believes the struggling Betway Premiership newcomers will improve this month as they look to climb off the foot of the table.

Magesi, who won the Carling Knockout Cup last year after defeating Mamelodi Sundowns in the final, currently prop-up the standings on the 16-team log with just six points from their first 10 league games.

They have won just once in the league all season, losing six times. They did manage to overcome the odds by beating leaders Mamelodi Sundowns in the final of the Carling Knockout Cup, but have since lost head coach Clinton Larsen.

Owen da Gama has since been named the new coach of the club and Chipezeze has been reflecting on the team’s recent struggles.

“It’s been difficult, but as players we know we have got a job to do and as much as things are not going well this past month ever since we won the Cup (Carling Knockout).

“But we have been trying so hard, but it’s only a phase and at the end of the day we have to keep on trying to work as hard as we can so that we can get that luck and things will fall into place in no time,” said Chipezeze.

Magesi ended 2024 bottom of the Betway Premiership log following a one-nil defeat by Orlando Pirates on Sunday, but Chipezeze says he is not too concerned with his side’s form as they also struggled at this time of the season last year when they were still in the second tier.

“Well, it’s just a phase. In football, you have got the highs and lows. I also remember also last season when we were still competing in the Motsepe Foundation Championship when we got to December, we struggled in some games and I feel like maybe history is repeating itself.

“After the December games, which I don’t know if I could call it a curse or not, when we started our games in January, things began to fall into place.

“So, we just have to make sure that we work even harder so that we can move out of the position that we are in right now.

“It’s obviously not nice as a footballer to end the year rock bottom, but we will try and make sure in the upcoming games we get positive results game-in, game-out so that we come out of the hole,” said Chipezeze.
