Bogus prosecutor in court over fraud
A SUSPECTED fraudster has been nabbed on allegations of posing as a public prosecutor at the High Court and swindling a desperate man of US$550.
Berven Chipunza, 32, appeared in court on allegations of fraud, and alternately impersonating a public official.
He denied the allegations when he appeared before Harare magistrate Sheunesu Matova. He was remanded out of custody to July 17 on $500 bail.
It is said in January this year, Chipunza met the complainant, Ngonidzashe Murau, at the High Court through an acquaintance.
Murau reportedly wanted assistance in a divorce case which was before the High Court after discovering that his lawyer was not handling his matter properly.
Chipunza allegedly misrepresented to Murau that he was a prosecutor at the High Court and that for him to file a complaint through the judge, US$550 was needed.
Reports are that the complainant made an inquiry at the High Court and at National Prosecuting Authority and discovered that Chipunza is not a prosecutor, leading to his arrest.
