BULAWAYO residents have expressed widespread shock and grief at the recent death of founding member of Bulawayo United Resident’s Association (Bura) and longest serving secretary, Silinganiso Samuel Moyo.
Moyo died on December 23 after having been in poor health in the last few years. He was 87-years-old at the time of his death.
Tshabalala Resident’s Association chairperson Gilbert Ndlovu told the Daily News yesterday that Moyo’s death is a great loss to the Bulawayo community.
“I am still shocked about the death of Moyo. He played a huge role in grooming me to be in the leadership position that I am in right now, so I have lost a mentor,” said Ndlovu.
“Moyo will be remembered by Bulawayo citizens because he was involved in a lot of civic engagements with a lot of organisations. His life was basically based on civic matters because he was just passionate about seeing people’s livelihoods being improved and making sure that people get access to basic services. In every township, he would make sure he addresses their problems, meaning the whole of Bulawayo was dependent on him to solve their grievances.”
Moyo’s grandson Nkosiyazi Mpofu said his grandfather would be remembered for giving good advice. “He was a great man and a good counsellor. He taught my grandmother a lot of things. When he was giving me advice, it was good to listen to. He was also a good teacher so we have lost a great warrior,” Mpofu said.
Moyo’s would be buried tomorrow in Tshabalala.
Residents who spoke to Daily News said Moyo would forever be remembered because he was a servant leader.
“We are overwhelmed with sadness because Moyo has left us. He was someone who always put other people’s interests first before his, a true example of servant leadership. We will always cherish everything that he did for us,” Mandla Nyoni from Entumbane suburb said.
