THE Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) will this evening host the much-anticipated 2025 National Journalism and Media Awards (Njama) in Harare.
The prestigious ceremony seeks to recognise exceptional achievements across diverse journalism fields, including investigative reporting, developmental journalism, photojournalism, environmental and data journalism, and public interest storytelling.
Running under the theme “Impact and Information Integrity: The Power of Truth”, this year’s edition is expected to draw leading figures from the media and business sectors.
Information minister Jenfan Muswere is set to grace the occasion, together with Swedish ambassador to Zimbabwe, Per Lindgarde. The Chinese ambassador to Zimbabwe, Zhou Ding, will deliver the keynote address.
In a statement, ZUJ secretary-general Perfect Hlongwane expressed appreciation to sponsors and partners for their continued support. He highlighted contributions from both longstanding and new partners, including NetOne, Caledonia Mining, the Securities and Exchange Commission of Zimbabwe, Innscor Africa’s Empower Tomorrow, Zimnat Life, and the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange.
These organisations, along with donations from several top executives across the country, were mobilised through the Finx Zimbabwe platform, known for its deep media connections.
ZUJ stressed that supporting journalism is not an act of charity but a strategic investment vital for building a credible media landscape and strengthening democracy.
“A well-supported media industry is also critical to the transparency, accountability and economic stability that benefit all sectors — including business,” Hlongwane said.
He reiterated the need for a vibrant, ethical and well-supported media industry as a cornerstone of national democracy and economic advancement. Hlongwane also urged other companies and institutions to emulate existing sponsors by investing in media development, noting that a robust media promotes transparency, accountability and national progress.
Representing the business community that partnered with the awards, Bulawayo businessman Morris Mpala described supporting media excellence as a “strategic investment in our nation’s integrity and economic future.”
“By championing ethical journalism, we promote transparency, build public trust and create a conducive environment for sustainable growth across all sectors,” Mpala said.
“Moreover, fostering a strong rapport with the media enhances collaborative communication, ensures accurate dissemination of information and strengthens the relationship between the business community and the public, ultimately contributing to a more informed and resilient society.”
