Zim cricket selectors opt to blend
ZIMBABWE Cricket (ZC) selectors have named a 25-man provisional squad for the home two-match Test series against Sri Lanka comprising experience and youth.
Harare Sports Club will host both encounters, with the opening match scheduled for January 19-23 while the second is scheduled to start on January 27.
Leading the pack on the list of experienced players is wicketkeeper-batsman Brendan Taylor with 28 Test matches, middle order batsman Craig Ervine on 15 matches and Regis Chakabva on 14 matches.
All-rounder Sikandar Raza and pace bowler Kyle Jarvis both have 12 Test matches under their belts.
The other players capped at Test level in the squad are Tendai Chatara (nine), PJ Moor (eight), Donald Tiripano (seven), Brian Chari (seven) and Chamu Chibhabha.
Brandon Mavuta (two), Prince Masvaure (two), Carl Mumba (two), Timycen Maruma (one) and Ryan Burl (one) have also been included in the squad.
The uncapped players named in the provisional list are Charlton Tshuma, Victor Nyauchi, Richard Ngarava, Ainsley Ndlovu, Brian Mudzinganyama, William Mashinge, Kevin Kasuza, Tapiwa Mufudza and Tino Mutombodzi.
All the players reported for their training camp yesterday ahead of the first Test match in nine days’ time.
“We know our home conditions better, our players are getting match-fit and enjoying some game time. So all we have to do is to get in the middle and perform,” Zimbabwe coach Lalchand Rajput said.
“We have not had much game time, so the players will be very keen and eager to seize this opportunity and do well.”
