Woman kills, buries new-born baby

“Children are infected due to mothers’ reluctance to get antiretroviral therapy during pregnancy and breastfeeding and others register at the clinics late whilst the children are already infected.”

A 33-YEAR-OLD Nkayi woman has been arrested after she allegedly killed and buried her newly-born baby. 

Silibaziso Mpofu, 33, of Dobhani village in Gwelutshena, Nkayi, Matabeleland North Province, allegedly gave birth to a baby boy on December 6 this year.  

 “The suspect gave birth to a baby boy and killed the infant by pouring hot water onto the infant’s stomach. She then dug a shallow pit in her yard and buried the body,” national police spokesperson Paul Nyathi said in a statement. 

Meanwhile, police in Esigodini have arrested two men suspected to have committed a homicide at Carmen Farm. 

“The ZRP confirms the arrest of Mncedisi Ncube and Thobani Khumalo, 26, in connection with a case of murder which occurred at Carmen Farm, Esigodini on 12/12/21,” police said. 

“The two suspects, together with one, only known as ‘Boss’, fatally assaulted Lawrence Khumalo, 23, all over the body with stones and logs after a misunderstanding over an undisclosed issue at a beer binge. 

“On noticing that the victim was unconscious, the suspects threw the victim into Umzingwane River. The body was later found floating in the river with a deformed skull 13/12/21.”  — ANDILE TSHUMA
