Woman allegedly dumps newborn baby

A SHURUGWI woman Portia Chikwaya appeared in court yesterday for allegedly giving birth and dumping the baby at an unknown place.

Chikwaya, 25, appeared before Shurugwi magistrate Sithabile Zungula facing charges of concealing the birth of a child and dumping the baby.

The court heard on an unknown date between October 24 and 28, Chikwaya was approximately eight months pregnant when she secretly gave birth to a baby.

However, she went on to dump the newly-born baby at an unknown place.

The case came to light when a neighbour discovered that Chikwaya was no longer pregnant yet did not have a baby.

“The accused was quizzed about the pregnancy and baby but could not provide a tangible response.

“Some people alleged that she had given birth and dumped the baby. The matter was reported to police leading to her arrest,” prosecutors told the court.

The baby has not been found ever since and the court remanded Chikwaya in custody awaiting a trial date which is yet to be prescribed.
