Top lawyer’s freedom bid fails
LAWYER Thabani Mpofu’s application for revocation of his placement on remand was yesterday dismissed by Chief Magistrate Munamato Mutevedzi.
Mpofu was placed on remand on counts of corruptly concealing a transaction from a principal and obstruction of justice.
The court said his lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa adopted a condemned procedure of allowing the court to place him on remand on facts alleged by the State and sought to reserve the right to challenge placement on remand on a later date.
The magistrate said there has not been any attempt to show that the grounds on which the remand was justified by the State at the initial remand date are no longer maintainable.
Mpofu is accused of conniving with other lawyers Tapiwa Makanza and Joshuwa Chirambwe in creating a fictitious person by the name Simbarashe Zuze and filing papers at the Constitutional Court challenging the appointment of Prosecutor-General Kumbirai Hodzi.
