National Foods honours Gems pledge

THE Zimbabwe national netball team observed the social distance rules as a handful of Gems’ stars were present to receive their monthly packs from National Foods in the capital at the weekend.

Only the trio of goal attack Ursula Ndlovu, Patricia Mauladi and Ndaizivei Madzikangava were joined by the Zimbabwe Netball Association (Zina) president Leticia Chipandu to receive food hampers from the team’s sponsor.

National Foods last entered into a 12-month agreement with Zina to provide the team with food hampers following their good showing at their debut appearance at the Netball World Cup in Liverpool, England.

“We are here to receive a commitment that National Foods made with Zina but because of the Covid-19 pandemic, we only have a few girls who have come in to collect the food for further distribution with the other girls,” Chipandu said.

“We are very happy to say that our girls are observing the social distancing that’s why they are not all here but I’m happy to say that everyone will get their share of the food.

“We want to thank National Foods for this commitment and it’s coming very handy for the girls since we know we are under lockdown they would need the food so that they keep strong and keep training for future assignment with netball.”

Speaking on behalf of National Foods, Cutting Edge Sport official Maimba Mapuranga said they are looking forward to a prolonged relationship beyond the initial 12-month agreement.

“As Cutting Edge Sport on behalf of National Foods and of course the netball association we have been making sure that sponsorship comes through,” he said.

“You might not know that National Foods is turning 100 years of support to the nation of Zimbabwe. And as they go another 100 years forward feeding Zimbabwe this is another component of their support that they are making sure that our athletes are taken care of especially during this difficult time of the coronavirus pandemic that has ravaged our country and the whole world at large and there’s literally mostly incomes eroded.

“National Foods has stepped in and made sure that our netball team can have food on their tables not only for them but of course for their loved ones and families so they receive mealie-meal, rice, porridge, beans and everything that is very nutrient for their body.

“We are very grateful to National Foods and we continue to ask them that they may continue of course beyond the 12 months and even for other athletes really so that our athletes in Zimbabwe will be taken care of.”
