MDC trio arrested with weapons at court
THREE suspected MDC-Alliance activists have been nabbed on allegations of possessing weapons at court during the bail hearing of the party’s vice chairperson Job Sikhala.
It is alleged that Terrence Manjengwa, Blessed Changara and Barnabas Gura intended to cause disturbances at the court but their plans were foiled by the police.
The three were not asked to plead to allegations of possession of offensive weapons at a public gathering and unnecessary movements.
They were remanded in custody to today for their bail ruling, with the State having challenged their admission to pre-trial freedom.
Allegations are that on September 3, the three together with others still at large, gathered at the Harare Magistrates’ Courts in solidarity with Sikhala, who was appearing for a bail hearing.
The police’s district reaction group was also deployed there to maintain law and order.
Reports are that the police received information that the three, who were in a vehicle with no registration plates, had weapons and intended to cause disturbances at court.
Reports are that the police approached the vehicle and conducted a search and recovered a catapult, stones, bolts and nuts and bottles, leading to the arrest of the trio.
Further allegations are that upon arrest, the trio was also found without letters exempting them to travel, which is a violation of coronavirus (Covid-19) regulations.
Prosecutor Lancelot Mutsokoti is appearing for the State.
