MDC-A trio denied bail

MDC-Alliance youth leaders — Harare West MP Joana Mamombe, Cecilia Chimbiri and Netsai Marova ― will languish in remand prison after they were yesterday denied bail in a case in which they are accused of falsifying their abduction.

Harare regional magistrate Bianca Makwande ruled that releasing the three would cause commotion as they had backing from the international community, resulting in Zimbabwe being sidelined.
The trio, through one of their lawyers Alec Muchadehama, complained that they had gone for three days without food as Prisons and Correctional Services officers denied them access to what had been brought by their relatives and legal representatives since Friday.
Makwande passed an order for them to be given food before the State was placed on notice of an application for further remand refusal on the next court date, June 26.
“The three accused persons are facing charges of communicating false statements prejudicial to the State or defeating the course of justice.
“The statements had the effect of tarnishing the image of Zimbabwe and adversely affected the economy,” said Makwande.
“The evidence against the accused persons is overwhelming.
“It excites unfavourable sentiments about the government that can easily induce the accused persons to abscond trial.
“I am convinced the scale tilts heavily against the accused persons and bail is denied.”
Makwande said the evidence adduced by the State was merited.
