A MAN from Nyamandlovu appeared in court yesterday and was remanded in custody for allegedly raping and infecting his seven-year-old minor cousin with HIV and a sexually transmitted infection (STI). The 39-year-old man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the victim, was not asked to plead when he appeared before the Bulawayo Magistrates Courts yesterday.
The man allegedly raped the minor in December when he visited his aunt (mother of the minor) as he usually did during holidays, prosecutors told the court.
The man went with the minor to the bushes where they had gone to herd cattle as usual. “The accused and complainant usually went to herd cattle together.
“He (accused) was regarded as a trusted family member and probably no one suspected his intentions,” prosecutors said. It is further alleged that the minor was raped in dense bushes and was threatened not to tell anyone. “The accused threatened to kill the minor if she said anything. “The minor concealed the matter for a long time,” the court heard.
The crime only surfaced when the minor fell ill and her mother noticed some unusual discharge from her private parts. The minor was taken to a local clinic and later revealed that she had been raped by her uncle.
The accused was tested and nurses found that he was HIV positive and had an STI. The minor was also tested and found to be HIV positive as well.
