Man helps teen terminate pregnancy

Government data shows that in January and February 2021, nearly 5,000 girls age 17 and under got pregnant.

A GLEN VIEW, Harare, man is in soup after he was arrested for allegedly assisting a 14-year-old girl to terminate pregnancy.

Justice Chinyadza, 45, was remanded in custody to today for bail application when he was arraigned before Harare magistrate Denis Mangosi.

Chinyadza was not asked to plead to unlawful termination of pregnancy. Abortion is currently illegal in Zimbabwe with only courts allowed to grant termination orders in cases where victims of rape fall pregnant.

The state alleges that sometime this month, the teenager contacted Chinyadza and told him that she was pregnant and wanted help to get rid of the unborn child.

It is alleged that Chinyadza directed the girl to a certain house in Glen Norah B where the two met.

While at the house, Chinyadza allegedly ordered the teen to go into a room where he inserted three unknown pills inside her private parts.

He allegedly told the teen that this was the process of terminating the pregnancy.

The court heard that after the procedure, the teen went back and after a few hours, she began bleeding.

Then on November 19, the teen reportedly collapsed whilst she was at home and was then taken to Sally Mugabe Central Hospital.

Prosecutors allege that the girl was then questioned over what had happened to her and she later revealed the matter, prompting Chinyadza’s arrest.
