Jet store loses $1million clothes
A HARARE man has been arrested on allegations of conniving in breaking into Jet stores in the capital and stealing various clothes worth over $1million, a court heard.
Robert Mhandu, according to the state, was caught wearing some of the alleged stolen clothes.
Mhandu appeared before Harare magistrate Barbra Mateko and he will be back in court today for bail ruling after the state opposed his pre-trial freedom.
In his application for bail through his lawyer, Mhandu said the clothes are his and some of the pants and bras allegedly recovered by the police belong to his wife.
It is alleged that on June 12 Mhandu and his two accomplices, who are still at large, went to the shop and smashed the display window and cut burglar bars to gain entry.
The court heard that the team took various clothing items and loaded them in their vehicle before driving away.
The clothes included suits, jackets, and track suits among others which were valued at $1 325 345.
The court heard that the police were alerted and viewed the CCTV footage and the offence was discovered.
Prosecutor Sebastian Mutizirwa told the court that the vehicle which was used to transport the alleged loot was found in Mhandu’s possession while he disputes ever being at the crime scene.
Meanwhile, a 23-year-old was slapped with a $500 fine after he caught stealing a sausage in a supermarket.
Frank Chauruka was seen on CCTV inserting a sausage in his trousers and was caught at the exit point. He was searched and the sausage was found.
