Harare to establish real estate agency

THE Harare City Council has resolved to establish a real estate agency to manage all its properties.

Principal communications officer Innocent Ruwende on Wednesday said the idea to establish the agency came about following an audit of council properties.

Last year, Harare instituted a probe into council rented accommodation, which revealed that 90 percent of tenants were illegally staying in municipal properties.

“After the investigation and results were presented before a full council meeting, it was recommended and resolved that a real estate agency be founded in order for the city to manage its own properties. This was done so that we could be accountable for everything that happens in our buildings,” Ruwende said.

He said the real estate agency would have special focus on council rented accommodation, which was problematic for the city.

HCC has around 9 000 houses and flats in Mbare, Mabvuku, Highfield, Tafara, Kambuzuma, Dzivaresekwa, Glen Norah, Belvedere, Milton Park and Borrowdale.
