Harare to demolish more illegal structures
HARARE City Council (HCC) has warned desperate home seekers to be wary of land barons who dupe them into buying land for residential purposes without official approval.
This comes as the Sheriff of the High Court on Tuesday demolished about 190 houses in Budiriro after the council won 20 court orders to get rid of the illegal settlements and houses in the city.
The demolitions came after several eviction notices were served in vain. Housing cooperatives that are now facing demolitions include 5 Chitepo Housing, Igarwe Housing, Greenlands Housing, Mushati Housing, Bantu Housing, Home of Angels Housing, Ideal Homes Housing and Progoti Housing among others.
HCC acting spokesperson Innocent Ruwende said: “We would like to reiterate that home seekers must not be duped of their hard-earned money by unscrupulous individuals and must verify with the local authority before purchasing any land.
“The court orders came as a result of legal battles wherein some people/cooperatives would have settled on certain pieces of land without council authority or following proper procedures,” Ruwende told the Daily News.
