Fleeing taxi driver kills pedestrian

A 65-YEAR-OLD man died on the spot and four others were injured when a suspected unlicensed pirate taxi driver knocked down pedestrians while fleeing an accident scene.
The accident happened in the Central Business District (CBD) during peak hour.
Bulawayo police spokesperson Abednico Ncube confirmed Neverson Siyapeyo of New Lobengula who was driving a Honda Fit vehicle hit five people and one died on the spot.
Ncube said Siyapeyo was driving due south along Hebert Chitepo Street when he hit a vehicle that was dropping off passengers on the left side.
“The suspect did not stop, but proceeded along the same road where he hit a sign post.
“He allegedly hit three more pedestrians who were crossing the road and did not stop.
“He proceeded due east into Fort Street where he hit a 65-year-old man who died on the spot,” Ncube added.
Siyapeyo only stopped his vehicle after knocking down the deceased.
Upon his arrest, police discovered that Siyapeyo had no valid driver’s and vehicle licence.
Siyapeyo is now facing charges of driving without a valid driver’s licence, driving a motor vehicle without a valid vehicle licence, and culpable homicide.
Ncube urged the public to desist from driving without licences and fleeing accident scenes.
