Ex-Vic Falls mayor challenges dismissal
OUSTED Victoria Falls mayor Somveli Dhlamini has approached the High Court challenging his expulsion from the opposition MDC party, arguing that he was wrongly ejected.
MDC secretary-general Chalton Hwende wrote to Dhlamini last month terminating his membership and subsequently recalled him as ward nine councillor and mayor on allegations of violating party obligations and instructions.
This was after Dhlamini refused to heed a directive to step aside in favour of the party’s preferred candidate and ward one councillor Margaret Valley. Dhlamini cited Hwende, MDC Alliance, MDC, party leader Nelson Chamisa, Matabeleland North provincial chairperson Prince Dubeko Sibanda and Local Government minister July Moyo as respondents in the High Court case.
In his papers, Dhlamini argued that the Chamisa-led MDC has no legal standing to fire him from his mayoral post or the party.
