FORMER cricketer John “Jack” Hardcourt Du Preez passed on yesterday morning at Dandaro in Harare due to a cancer-related ailment, the Daily News can report.He was 77.
Du Preez was a natural leg spinner, who horned his bowling skills at a tender age of seven, and went on to play over a hundred First Class matches during the Rhodesia era before independence in 1980.
In September 1979, Du Preez became the first local cricketer to be granted an official benefit match at the age of 36.
Former Zimbabwe Cricket director of development Nick Chouhan paid tribute to Du Preez for the role he played in the game’s growth.
“Jack was not only a fantastic cricketer, but also a wonderful gentleman who was a successful farmer, a businessman and a popular figure in the tobacco industry.
