A HARARE magistrate yesterday heard that Vice President Constantino Chiwenga’s estranged wife Marry, had undergone psychiatric evaluation during her committal to prison hospital and the State is now waiting for results to determine if she is fit to stand trial.
Marry, pictured, is currently facing numerous charges before the court, including attempting to kill Chiwenga, money laundering and assaulting her children’s minder.
The court then directed that she be kept in custody for 10 days to be examined to ensure that she is mentally fit to stand trial after her lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa argued that Marry was taking very strong medication which made it difficult to follow proceedings.
This was also confirmed by Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals head of psychiatric department, Fungisai Mazhandu, who also examined Marry.
Mazhandu told the court that Marry was not mentally fit to stand trial as she suffers from depression and anxiety and the medication she is currently having was taking a toll on her mental state.
She also added that Marry is battling a mental disorder caused by the prolonged separation from her children that remain in Chiwenga’s custody.
This resulted in Harare magistrate Lazini Ncube committing her to the Harare Remand Prison hospital for her to be examined by two other doctors.
However, Marry was released from the prison earlier this week before the expiry of those 10 days after Mtetwa made an urgent High Court application last week.
Prosecutor Michael Reza yesterday told the court that Marry was examined but the findings from the examination are yet to reach the clerk of court.
