HARARE City Council human capital director Matthew Marara has been freed by the High Court on $10 000 bail.
His lawyer Tsitsi Mazikana successfully sought his pre-trial freedom at the upper court with Judge Benjamin Chikowero ordering him to report to the police thrice weekly.
Marara was also ordered to reside at his given address and not to interfere with State witnesses until the matter is finalised.
He is jointly charged with Aaron Tayerera on allegations of fraud involving a housing stand in Strathaven. Both were initially denied bail at the Harare magistrate’s court.
Tayerera is, however, still in custody. The two are alleged to have identified an open space in Strathaven which they demarcated to create a stand which was given a fictitious stand number.
The court heard that the housing stand was disposed of through a real estate agent to an unsuspecting land seeker.
The court heard that the offence was discovered by the council through a tip off and preliminary investigations revealed that the two flouted procedures.
The matter also dragged in other council employees, Charles Sigauke and district officer Tutsirai Kanojerera, who were also denied bail by the court. They are accused of having prejudiced the council of US$14 400.
