WATER levels in the country’s major dams continue to rise due to rainfall activity in most parts of the country, the Zimbabwe National Water Authority (Zinwa) said at the weekend.
In an update, Zinwa said as of December 7, 2022, the national dam level average stood at 80.1 percent, which is higher than 59.7 percent expected during this time of the year.
The proportion of dams that have recorded positive changes has risen to 33.8 percent. Zinwa corporate communications manager Marjorie Munyonga said in the past week, all provinces recorded positive changes in dam levels with the exception of Mashonaland Central.
“The improving water levels in the dams point to increased water security for the country with most dams supplying water to urban areas satisfying the 21-month rule.
“The Zimbabwe National Water Authority however continues to appeal to all people drawing raw water from Zinwa managed dams to ensure that their water use is in terms of water abstraction agreements as required by the law as any illegal abstractions distort water use patterns and make it extremely difficult for Zinwa to plan the allocation of the available water among users,” said Munyonga.
Zimbabwe is currently experiencing power cuts due to reduced generation at the Kariba Dam where water levels have fallen, with inflows expected to make a difference in the first quarter of next year. – New Ziana
