A GROUP of 36 women acquired gold claims for free in Marondera with assistance from Togabless Mining Investments in its efforts to empower women in mining.

Togabless specialises in mine pegging and beacon installation, exploration, geophysics, contract mining and construction of mills, among other things, and has agreed to provide pegging and exploration services to women miners in Mashonaland East.

Fatima Miti, Togabless board member, said the company is ceding mining claims to women syndicates, emphasising that it was optimistic that this would end side marketing and ensure gold is delivered to Fidelity Printers Refinery.

“We wish that the government allocates mines to small scale miners. Help us communicate with the powers-that-be so that mining claim certificates are quickly facilitated. The banking sector must accept or recognise our claim certificates to capitalise our mines. We are also saying our laws must be looked at to promote small scale miners,” Miti said.

Small-scale mining contributes about 70 percent of gold deliveries in the country.

Speaking at the handover ceremony in Marondera, Mashonaland East minister of State for Provincial Affairs Apolonia Munzverengi thanked Togabless for complementing government efforts towards attaining the 2023 US$12 billion mining economy.

“Zimbabwe is richly endowed with natural resources and Mashonaland East is not an exception. While the province is rich, the citizens are wallowing in abject poverty,” Munzverengi said in a speech read on her behalf.

“The government is proud of the participation of private players like Togabless, exhibited through gender balance and diversity in championing and promoting initiatives for marginalised groups throughout Zimbabwe by powering them in recognising the need for inclusivity with mining.”

Munzverengi said Zimbabwe artisanal and small scale miners are a major source of hope for millions of rural entrepreneurs worldwide and yet it also poses challenges for local governments in terms of regulation and capturing resource tax revenue to fund national development projects.

She urged beneficiaries to carry out professional mining and deliver gold to Fidelity Printers and Refinery.
