17 perish in single accident
SEVENTEEN people died on Sunday night in a horrific road accident at the 130 km peg along the Harare, Nyamapanda road.
Police spokesperson Paul Nyathi yesterday said 14 people died on the spot while three others passed on at Mutoko Hospital after an Isuzu KB double cab and a BMW vehicle collided.
“A white Isuzu KB double cab which was travelling towards Murewa was involved in a head-on collision with a white BMW vehicle which was travelling in the opposite direction.
“Fourteen people died on the spot while three died on admission at Mutoko Hospital. The driver of the Isuzu died on the spot. The bodies of the victims were taken to Mutoko District Hospital for post mortem and those injured were admitted at the same institution,” said Nyathi in a statement.
Eight of the victims were identified by their next of kin and these are Sandra Kanobata,19, Abigal Chitimba, 30, Major Mushumbi, 7, Ngaakudzwe Nkolomah, 1, Nyasha Chikuza, 7, Masimba Rutsito, 39, and Kupakwashe Rutsito all from Mutoko, while Samuel Mapuranga, 2, is from Estalia village, Kadoma.
Nyathi urged motorists to be considerate on the roads and avoid reckless driving.
“Motorists should avoid reckless driving especially trying to overtake in situations which are not safe. They should not exceed the loading capacity of vehicles when carrying goods and passengers,” Nyathi said.
This comes after police confirmed that 18 people died in road accidents that occurred during the Christmas holiday this year compared to 17 deaths last year.
The police said most of the accidents were caused by speeding.
“Most of the road accidents were caused by speeding, following too close to other motorists and reversing errors.”
