16 succumb to Covid-19 in August

ZIMBABWE has recorded 16 Covid-19 deaths so far this month, bringing the total number of people who have succumbed to the disease to 5 593 people since it broke in March 2020.

According to the ministry of Health and Child Care, the highest number of deaths so far this month were recorded on August 18, when three people passed on in Bulawayo, Harare and Matabeleland North.

During the month under review, Harare, Manicaland and Bulawayo have each recorded three Covid-19 deaths so far this month. Though the country has recorded a massive decline in Covid-19 related deaths, the highest daily death rate was recorded on July 27 last year when 102 people died.

Zimbabwe reported its first case of coronavirus on March 20, 2020 and the swift response of the government, which saw it rolling out a massive vaccination programme which received accolades from international health experts, prevented the country from witnessing high numbers of new infections and deaths.

The country has been witnessing a gradual decline in new infections and deaths since the beginning of the year, leading the government to relax most Covid-19 restrictions. Last Tuesday, the government scrapped the mandatory wearing of face masks for those that have received three World Health Organisation recommended vaccinations. — New Ziana
