TEENAGE swimming sensation Donata Katai will captain the Zimbabwe team that left the country yesterday for the prestigious South Africa National Aquatic Championships set for Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

The six-day event will kick start tomorrow and will run until April 11 with more than 500 swimmers expected to participate. Katai has already declared the team ready. “Our preparations went well and we hope to do well at the tournament.

I’m very happy and proud to represent my country and I hope to bring back home some medals,” said Katai. Team coach Masi Makaedza is confident that his charges will perform better at the tournament.

“The preparations have gone very well and we are expecting our swimmers to post the best times. We want the athletes to improve on their personal best times and if we make finals or get medals, it will be a bonus for us.

“The tournament is also a good platform for the swimmers to prepare for the upcoming African championships.” Apart from Katai other swimmers who will represent the country include Alexis Johnsen, Teak Watson, Tichatonga Makaya, Khaya Vimba, Mikayla Makwabarara, Liam O’Hara, Limbikani Kalipengule, Patrick Duff, Jayden de Sward, and Anje Van As.
