AWARD-WINNING Afro-fusion singer and songwriter Victor Kunonga is back at Sherwood Golf Club in Harare tonight where he will serenade guests with his music.
He will perform alongside Zimdancehall artiste Dhadza D.
Bulawayo-born Kunonga will take the opportunity to popularise his songs including ‘Ngizongena’ which captures the fantasy he harboured growing up. It was released early this year.
“I wrote this song reminiscing on my younger days when I would fantasise as a chief, a phenomenon a lot of young men go through. I imagined I would be sitting on the throne and be able to help my people. I felt the song sounded better in Ndebele, the language I grew up speaking and the chorus ‘Ngizongena’ was just befitting for the song,” he said.
Kunonga said ‘Ngizongena’ is one of several songs in Ndebele he has composed.
“I wrote this song around 2014. This isn’t my first Ndebele song. I have one on my very first Album ‘Such is Life’ titled ‘Umazenza.’ I have another on the ‘Ndatsva’ album titled ‘Masithandaneni (love one another).’ I also included Shona and Ndebele lyrics on some songs like ‘Ikhotha Eyikhothayo’ and ‘Zivanayi,” the highly respected musician said.
Kunonga’s music was once described by the late South African jazz legend Hugh Masekela as “a fresh, dynamic international sound rooted in African rhythms; musically very superior.”
