IT was a hit song that catapulted him to national prominence and true to the lyrics in that tune, Tocky Vibes has almost lived to every word he sings in ‘Mhai.’
Tocky Vibes, real name Obey Makamure, sings about a mother who is imploring her son not to forget his roots when he makes it big in the world.
Not surprisingly, the Zimdancehall artiste has remained humble and always at home with the less fortunate, a trait he showcased when he performed in Mutoko during the festive season.
It was a rare show for Tocky Vibes in Kanyongo Village, some 17km West of Mutoko in the where he serenaded the less privileged children at a function hosted by Choice Kanyongo, an America-based Zimbabwean philanthropist who was raised in the area.
At least 500 children between the ages of five and 11 from such areas like Katsukunya, Mutambwe, Nyakabau, Gumbure and Manhemba attended the annual Choice Children’s party.
Choice, who made the journey for this year’s event having missed last year’s due to Covid-19 restrictions, showered praises on Tocky Vibes for the kind gesture.
“He is a very humble and patient guy and took time to take pictures and autographs with these kids. Tocky showed us all what it means to give back to the community. We will forever be grateful for this act of kindness,” Choice told the Daily News.
“Thanks to Tocky, this year’s event was a huge success. We keep improving every year, and we are really grateful to the Almighty.
“It was a unique day for most children. Tocky Vibes performed for the children and they were extremely excited to meet him in person. The fact that he took some time off his busy schedule to donate it to the Children of Mutoko meant a lot to the parents and the whole community leaders.”
Herdman Nyamutsahuni, who was one of the guests at the event, lauded Choice and her family for the great work while urging more from the area to follow in her footsteps.
“I would like to praise the Kanyongo family for the tremendous work that they are doing for our children here,” he said.
“This is amazing and I hope more people will be able to give back to the community. Children are used to seeing this on television, but it has since been brought to them, which is great.”
