ECONET Wireless has announced that it is actively tackling recent security incidents involving blocked or compromised WhatsApp accounts on its mobile network.
In an official statement, the mobile network operator reassured subscribers that it is resolving the breaches.
“Econet Wireless wishes to assure customers that it is actively addressing the recent incidents involving blocked or compromised WhatsApp accounts,” the company said.
“Working in consultation with Meta, the company that owns WhatsApp, Econet is supporting affected customers to restore access to their accounts and continues to closely monitor the situation,” the telecommunications provider added.
To help affected users navigate the recovery process, Econet has established specialised support channels across all its touchpoints.
“Customers requiring further assistance can dial the dedicated Econet short code 658 for WhatsApp-specific support. All our service centres, Econet Shops, digital and social media platforms also remain available to offer customer support,” the company noted.
The company further advised subscribers to adopt strict digital safety habits to protect their personal messaging accounts from ongoing cyber threats.
“As a precaution, customers are urged to remain vigilant by enabling passkeys and two-step authentication or verification on their WhatsApp accounts,” Econet said.
“Customers should never share their PINs, passwords or one-time passwords with anyone, and should exercise caution when responding to unfamiliar calls and messages. Customers should also avoid clicking suspicious links and be sure to independently verify any requests for money — even when they appear to come from someone they know.”
Econet Wireless is Zimbabwe’s largest telecommunications and digital solutions provider, commanding over 70 percent of the mobile market share.
With millions relying on WhatsApp as their primary platform for daily communication, business operations, and financial transactions, securing instant messaging channels remains critical to safeguarding the country’s broader digital economy against growing cybersecurity threats.
