HARARE – Renowned local fitness trainer Gerald Maguranyanga believes he has the antidote to help Zimbabwean football after he registered as an intermediary yesterday.
An intermediary is basically a football agent who helps players negotiate moves from one club to another.
Local footballers have struggled to make the grade in the top European leagues with Benjani Mwaruwari being the last Zimbabwean to play in the English Premier League.
At the moment, midfielder Marvellous Nakamba, who is on the books of Belgian side Club Brugge, has been linked with a move to English giants Liverpool.
Warriors captain Knowledge Musona seemed to be on the right track when he moved from South African giants Kaizer Chiefs to Bundesliga side Hoffenheim.
However, his career did not take off in Germany and after a number of loan spells, he was sold to Belgian side KV Oostende.
Many Zimbabweans hoped Khama Billiat would be the next big thing to come of local football after leading Mamelodi Sundowns to the African Champions League title in 2016.
But Billiat failed to attract suitors from the big European leagues and he is now on the verge of joining Azerbaijan Premier League side Qarabag.
Maguranyanga believes the vast networks he has accumulated in the global sporting industry will be the key factor in helping develop the careers of local footballers.
“My operational strategy will be simple; work within the confines of the regulations and engage relevant football stakeholders to help, in any way I can to elevate our football situation, and indeed Zimbabwe, even in this much-touted new dispensation in our nation,’’ the former Warriors fitness trainer said.
“Indeed, my humble efforts seek to complement all others, to reverse the presently-undesirable condition that hinders the acceptance of our players in overseas markets, an untenable, unsafe football situation.
“It is indisputable public knowledge that for over 25 years, I have served distinctly as a top-level, revolutionary and professional fitness trainer in football, rugby, athletics, as well as privately.”
Maguranyanga added: “As an ambitious intermediary, I seek to use my vast, hitherto unused, global sporting contacts to force open doors for those of our deserving football athletes; and as an experienced sporting consultant and intermediary, with an advantageous specialised conditioning background; I will exploit my knowledge and help target the common enemy around our football – specifically, the shoddy and half-baked, almost criminal, inadequate preparation of our Zimbabwean football athletes.”
