HARARE – Zifa Northern Region Division One champions Herentals rounded off their season by winning the Zimbabwe Defence Forces solidarity football tournament at the National Sports Stadium B Arena on Saturday.
The invitational tournament, which was organised by Herentals Group of Colleges in honour of new President Emmerson Mnangagwa, featured four teams — Cranborne Bullets, Blue Swallows, ZRP FC and Herentals Football Club.
And on their way to winning the tournament Herentals edged Blue Swallows 1-0 in the first semi-final before edging ZRP FC 4-2 in the final following a penalty shoot-out after the match had ended goalless in regulation time.
ZRP FC beat Cranborne Bullets 2-0 in the other semi-final.
Herentals team manager Oliver Chirenga lauded his charges for a job well done saying they are now looking forward to much bigger challenges that await them in the Castle Premiership next year.
“What a way to end our season. By winning this tournament, our boys have once again proved their class. To us it was an important tournament in honour of the president,” Chirenga said.
“Our attention is now to compete with the big boys in the Premiership next year. But for now, we are breaking and we will regroup early next year to begin preparations in the top flight league.”
Other three teams that were also promoted into the topflight for next season are Mutare City from Eastern Region, Nichrut of Central Region and Bulawayo Chiefs from Southern Region.
