HARARE – Former Warriors captain Ephraim Chawanda has told the Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa) to “go to hell” after being included in the Warriors Legends squad that is set to play Barcelona Legends in a high-profile match set for Sunday at the National Sports Stadium.
With only three days left before the match, Chawanda, who captained the Warriors during Reinhard Fabisch’s Dream Team era in the early 90s and came close to qualifying for the 1994 World Cup finals, used his Facebook page yesterday to distance himself from the match he described as a “circus”.
Chawanda, who is now based in Botswana, had no kind words for the football association saying: “My friends and family have been misled by the media that I will be in Zimbabwe for a certain game in Harare, it’s a lie. For those who put my name on such a list without consulting me, for lack of better words, please go to hell, I cannot be part of disorganisation or a circus that disrespects former footballers.”
However, in his response Zifa communications manager Xolisani Gwesela insisted that they have notified all the players that were included on the provisional squad.
The selection of the Warriors Legends has since stirred debate following the omission and inclusion of certain players.
Ronald Sibanda was a late inclusion to the team following a public outcry following his omission from the initial squad.
The international friendly match is being organised by the government through the ministry of Sport Arts and Culture and is expected to market the country as a major tourist attraction.
The Barcelona Legends side will feature some of the greatest football stars to have graced the game, who include Edmilson, Gaizka Mendieta, Edgar Davids and Patrick Kluivert among others.
