Warriors’ call-up for Peter, Benjani

HARARE – Celebrated soccer stars Peter Ndlovu and Benjani Mwaruwari will temporarily leap out of retirement and represent Zimbabwe in the upcoming Warriors versus Barcelona Legends match scheduled for National Sports Stadium next weekend.

Zifa president Philip Chiyangwa confirmed at a media briefing yesterday that the two ex-stars, who at their peak played in the English Premiership, will be joined by other former greats whose names will be announced in due course. The match is pencilled for November 12.

“I do realise of course that the Barcelona legends are exceptional but Zimbabwe has also got legends the likes of … Ndlovu and …Mwaruwari and others…,” Chiyangwa told reporters yesterday.

“We are looking at the possibility that a few of the players…we are not using the players playing on the 8th and the ones playing on the 11th in Namibia because the Fifa statutes don’t allow for me to use the same national team that I have called so this team is specifically targeted to bring down the Barca legends on November 12.”

The Barcelona Legends team will include the likes of Patrick Kluivert and his Netherlands counterpart Edgar Davids, Brazilian trio of Edimilson, Rivaldo and Julian Belleti, Gianluca Zambrotta, Frenchman Ludovic Giuly and Gaizka Mendietta.

Rayco Garcia another former Barcelona legend, who is coordinating this match together with the Sports ministry, said his fellow players are looking forward to visiting Zimbabwe for the first time.

“I want to exhibit Zimbabwe around the world. I want to use our players; I want to use the name and brand of Barcelona to expose the name and expose the opportunities (found in Zimbabwe),” he said.

“This is a wonderful land it’s a place of wonder where people can come and visit and enjoy and take an opportunity to invest.

“Many people don’t have much information and it is (exhibition match) going to help spread more information about Zimbabweans and about Zimbabwe as a country.”
