HARARE – Triathlon Zimbabwe (TZ) has named a prospective four-member team for next year’s Youth Olympic Games (Yog) in Buenos Aires, Argentina but warned it will not be an easy road.
Hellenic Academy’s duo of Mikayla Colegrave and Matthew Denslow will be joined by Andie Kuipers of Peterhouse Girls and Peterhouse Boys’ Marcel Paulser in preparing for next year’s global youth extravaganza in October.
“Triathlon Zimbabwe are proud to confirm that four of our junior triathletes have been selected as prospective competitors at the Youth Olympic Games being held in Buenos Aires…the road to Yog will be long and hard but will also be fun and full of new life experiences,” TZ president Rick Fulton said.
“None of the athletes are guaranteed a place at Yog and there are several events involved leading up to the final qualifying event.
“These fine young athletes will also have to compete in various events in 2018 including our National Championships in February.”
The road to Buenos Aires will also include competing in the South African Championships in March, Africa Champs (April) in Rabat, Morocco and the final event at the Africa Youth Games in Algiers, Algeria in July.
Three of the athletes accompanied by head coach Pamela Fulton left the country on Wednesday night for a Yog camp and race in Agidir, Morocco with the exception of Denslow who is currently writing school examinations.
The Yog camp in Agidir will see the local athletes being exposed to team building exercises, lectures and training with other athletes from all over Africa among other host of activities.
The purpose of the camp is to improve the athletes’ skills and performance levels in conjunction with their national coaches under the management of international level coaches.
