HARARE – Nichrut assumed top spot in the Zifa Northern Region Division One League following a convincing 3-0 victory over struggling Border Strikers over the weekend.
The result means Nichrut are now on top of the log courtesy of a superior goal difference as they are now tied on 64 points with Tongogora and Whawha, who occupy second and third places respectively, having all played 30 matches.
With four matches left before the season ends, there is no favourite yet as all the three title-chasing teams continue to exchange the top spot every week.
Tongogara, who prior to weekend’s games were on top of the table, suffered a damaging 2-1 defeat to Chrome Stars.
Former Premiership side Whawha, kept their chances alive with a crucial 0-1 win over FC Platinum U19 at Mandava Stadium to ensure they move to 64.
The Zimbabwe Prison and Correctional Services side were banking on their abandoned match against Makusha but the result was awarded to the latter on a 3-0 scoreline.
If the judgment had favoured Whawha, then it would have meant that Luke Petros Jukilile’s side would have opened a three-point lead at the top of the log.
And while the race remains tight in Central Region, Herentals and Bulawayo Chiefs of Northern and Southern Regions respectively have already sealed promotion into the premiership next season.
Herentals were presented with their trophy at the weekend for topping the league.
They continued with their fine season when they beat Harare City Cubs at Rufaro Stadium before honouring their players for the successful campaign.
