HARARE – A policeman who shot a female workmate in a bid to sneak into Justice Lavender Makoni’s residence to see his girlfriend has been sentenced to six years.
Harare regional magistrate Fadzai Mthombeni convicted Lloyd Salobe of attempted murder after a full trial.
Mthombeni suspended two years of the sentence on condition of good behaviour.
Salobe will serve an effective six years.
Prosecutor Ressie Nyamombe urged the court to pass a stiffer penalty because Salobe had exhibited the highest degree of negligence.
“The complainant is lucky to be alive after a bullet went through her stomach and got out through her bum.
“There were high chances that she could have been history by now,” Nyamombe said.
“After committing the offence, accused person fled and left the wounded complainant for dead and further went to lie to police that he had been violated by robbers before he was also booked into hospital.”
Salobe, 29, was stationed at Tomlison Depot but was deployed at Macro Economic Planning minister Obert Mpofu’s house when he shot a fellow workmate Hazel Mutasa who had been deployed at Makoni’s residence.
Mutasa was recently discharged from Parirenyatwa Hospital where she was booked for treatment of the gunshot wound.
“We wrestled as I wanted to alert other occupants of the house.
“He shot me and the bullet went through my left abdomen and came out through my right bum,” Mutasa told the court.
“He fled from the scene and I screamed for help until another cop who was manning a house close to Makoni’s heard me and came to my rescue.”
The State proved that sometime in February, Salobe went to 14236 Strakker Avenue Gunhill where his girlfriend worked.
The court heard that around 2:30 am Mutasa heard a knock at the guard room door and asked for the password from the person before Salobe responded with a positive password.
Mutasa was convinced that the person knocking was a member of her shift and opened the door.
She was, however, surprised to see the person covering himself with a mask but wearing a police cap and armed with an AK rifle.
They wrestled before Mutasa was shot in the stomach, prompting Salobe to flee from the scene.
