HARARE – Harare City Council has begun rolling out 3 000 prepaid water meters to residents under its pilot project.
The project, which has targeted Bluffhill, the Avenues, Sunningdale, Kambuzuma, Greendale and Avondale, has already begun.
Companies providing the pilot meters are Hukoshwa, Industrial Products, Syvern, Tricon Investments and Utility Systems.
HCC spokesperson Michael Chideme said estimations are that the city can reduce costs by up to 30 percent as a result of the reduction of non-revenue water.
“These meters are principally a water management tool,” he said.
Prepaid meters have been met with resistance from the Combined Harare Residents Association and Community Water Alliance, who have organised demonstrations against the devices.
In their combined petition, the organisations argue that as water is a basic right it should not be privatised.
