SA artiste dedicates Neria to his mother

HARARE – South African artiste Jeremy Olivier flawlessly performed Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi’s song Neria on the reality television singing competition called The Voice (South Africa) as a dedication to his mother on Mother’s Day.

After the performance, the Chinhoyi-born Olivier described the sound track for the 1993 film as a song close to his heart on his Facebook page.

“Best day of my life, getting to perform with Ladysmith Black Mambazo and then performing a song so close to my heart to honour my mom on Mother’s Day, and honouring my dad’s memory at the same time.  All on live TV on The Voice SA stage.

“So, on Saturday morning when I was rehearsing Neria in the green room, I didn’t realise that Ladysmith Black Mambazo had walked in and began to sing with me. It was a deeply moving experience. I asked them if I could film it a little later and they graciously said yes. Besides the actual performance on Sunday this was my moment to treasure for a lifetime,” he said.

His performance, on The Voice show, which is aired on DStv’s Mnet Channel 101, moved audience members and one woman believed to be his mother could barely hold her tears.

Olivier’s biography reveals that he ventured into music at the age of 14.

“After completing his “A” Levels in Harare, Jeremy decided to further pursue music, and moved to Cape Town, where he obtained a Bachelor of Music Honours in jazz performance from the University of Cape Town’s College of Music.”

Olivier has performed with some great international artists, such as George Benson, Katherine Jenkins and Jonathan Butler.

He has also shared the stage with top South African musicians like Danny K, Loyiso Bala, Sibongile Khumalo, GoodLuck, Judith Sephuma, Ard Matthews, Arno Carstens, Freshly Ground, Mango Groove, Jimmy Nevis and Johnny Clegg.

The South Africa-based artiste has performed all over South Africa, as well as in Germany, Switzerland, Holland and Dubai at various shows, festivals and concerts.

A few months ago, Zimbabwe-born Brian Nhira performed brilliantly on The Voice (America) where he impressed top musician and music producer Pharrell Williams.
