Mwanjali demoted

HARARE – CAPS United defender Method Mwanjali (pictured) has been stripped of his captaincy after his off-the-field actions which saw him being charged with attempted murder.

Mwanjali, who was recently granted $100 bail by the High Court, and teammate Archieford Gutu, made the headlines recently and spent time in police custody following a brawl at a local night club.

Moses Muchenje is the new substantive Makepekepe captain and will be assisted by defender Stephen Makatuka.

United coach Lloyd Chitembwe said Mwanjali will only lead the team in the event that both Muchenje and Makatuka are not available.

“Method (Mwanjali) was the first captain deputised by Moses (Muchenje) while Steven (Makatuka) was the third captain but after what happened I had to change all that,” Chitembwe said during a press conference yesterday.

“I didn’t want unnecessary attention on the team leader so that’s the reason why I gave the armband to Moses and as we speak right now, he is the first team captain.

“Unfortunately, he will not play on Sunday because he is injured and Steven will be in charge of the team while Method will be his assistant.”

Turning to his side’s Castle Lager Premiership match against Border Strikers on Sunday, Chitembwe said he expects United to continue with their good start to the season which has seen them record three wins and a draw.

Last weekend, the Green Machine dispatched rivals Dynamos 1-0 to end a six-year jinx over their city neighbours.

“We are not looking at what we have done in our previous matches. We have the desire and hunger to keep on working hard,” Chitembwe said.
