HARARE – Twelve-year-old Wiseman Mavhunga Jr was crowned the overall winner of the Kariba All Styles Taekwondo tournament held over the weekend.
Mavhunga had also won his Under-35kg category after defeating Dalton Dalion, a holder of a black belt, in the final.
In the open men (71kgs and above), Farai Murarami won the gold medal after overcoming Ishumael Chipangura in the final.
The Under-70kgs men category was won by Shawn Masukure, who beat Richard Mubaiwa in the final.
Mubaiwa needed medical treatment after he had been knocked out cold for at least 10 minutes.
Only three women participated in the tournament in the Under-45kg category. Rudo Mavhunga won the gold medal against Lilian Dalion in the final.
The other female fighter in the tournament was Isabel Manyowani.
Speaking to the Daily News, tournament organiser Zimbabwe Exodokan Karate Association master Wiseman Mavhunga Snr said: “The sport is now improving as 35 people participated in the tournament and to be hosted in Kariba is a way of letting it known in other provinces as it was only popular in Harare.”
The all styles tournament was a combination of shorin jikempo, exodokan, shukokuai, international taekwondo and kiokshin.
Teekwondo was introduced in the country in 1997 for members of the Zimbabwe National Army but lobbying by the Education ministry saw it being practiced in schools with many children encouraged to participate in the sport.
