Junior local tennis stars march on

HARARE – Zimbabwe junior tennis players are posting impressive performances at the ongoing International Tennis Federation — CAT African Junior Circuit in Bulawayo.

In the Under-14 boys’ category, four Zimbabweans progressed to the quarter-finals of the tournament.

Anesu Kwirirai, who is seeded third in the tournament, beat Botswana’s Mogorosi Katlego 6-0, 6-0 to book a place in the last eight.

Kwirirai will now face Scott Andreas from South Africa, who beat Zimbabwean Evans Joshua.

Taona Muhwandagara beat USA’s Kumail Mohammed 6-3, 6-4 to storm into the quarter-finals.

Muhwandagara will now clash against Botswana’s Saleshando Loago, who defeated Zimbabwe’s Zamani Moyo.

Another Zimbabwean, Ethan Sibanda posted a convincing straight-set win over compatriot Mlanga Vuyiso 6-0, 6-0.

Sibanda will battle it out with Damien Nezar from South Africa, who beat Namibia’s Luca Monteforte.

Another local player, Thabo Ncube beat South Africa’s Diken De Jongh 6-4, 6-3 to book a place in the quarter-finals.

Ncube will now face South Africa’s Connor Kruger, who beat Zimbabwe’s Regan Peters.

In the Under-12 boys’ category, two Zimbabweans progressed to the quarter-finals of the tournament. Zimbabwe’s Michael Happy, who is seeded third in the tournament, beat Joseph Maguthswa 6-1, 6-2.

Happy will now face Benjamin Scott from South Africa who beat Zimbabwe’s Tadiwa Mufute.

Bukhosi Moyo, who is seeded fifth in the tournament, beat Zimbabwe’s Anotidaishe Matiza 6-3, 6-1.

Moyo will now face second seed Rakotondrainibe Sampras of Madagascar.

In the Under-12 girls’ category, at least two Zimbabweans progressed to the quarter-finals.

Victoria Sasinka won against another Zimbabwean Nicole Matukutire 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Sasinka will now face South Africa’s Greyling Line, who beat Tinashe Mukumba of Namibia.

Ruvarashe Shoko won against compatriot Munashe Bera 6-1, 6-0. Shoko will now face Botwana’s Monnayo Leungo, who beat Zambia’s Mubanga Kalukango.
